1. Indigenous Art

Have you decided on a direction for your written piece yet? There are 2 weeks left for this first essay.

I have a copy of the Phaidon book on Aboriginal Art (1998) which people can use in class and photocopy small sections from if you would like.

Here is an example of a short essay on Emily Kame Kngwarreye from the National Gallery of Australia:

It's an excellent guide for the sort of essay you will be writing for this assessment task. The length is about 900 words. It is well referenced - but with footnotes instead of Harvard style in-text citation - nonetheless, it shows the type of writing you need to aim for.

2. Creativity in different cultures

We will engage in a class discussion today about creativity in different cultures. You are asked to bring something to class - a book, DVD, a URL for something online (a text, a website) that reflects an aspect of creativity in a culture that you come from, or that is important or of influence to you.

My selection is a book that I will bring to class titled:

Francesco Clemente: Three Worlds, 1990, Philadelphia Museum of Art

It's a book I purchased when travelling in Europe around 1990, and I saw this exhibition in London at the Academy of Art.

Clemente was an influential artist for me around that time, for a number of reasons, and I think this book demonstrates the issues we are discussing as it looks at one artist's creative pratice and the influence of different cultures on his work.

Celemente was one of the big Italian art-stars of the Post Modern era - one of the "Three Cs" - (Cucchi, Chia and Clemente) that were big names at the time. He is still a major artist, and he has a great current website:

Discuss different ways of writing for a blog, review some different uses for blogs by artists & writers

4. Writing an essay plan

I will be asking to see an essay plan for your current assessment task. The essay plan will help you to identify what you want to write about and help you to structure your essay in a flowing and logical way. It will also hlep you to identify what references you need and where you can use quotes.

Make a blog post about your selected item related to creativity in different cultures today, and perhaps comment on a couple of your classmate's posts too if you have time.

Use any spare time to work on your assessment task and to populate your blog with engaging content. Please ask me for help if you're not sure what to write about or how to make a start.
