1. Project Description

AIM

To design and implement an online folio and identity to showcase all of your work and engage and connect with online communities. You will need to apply your understanding of the principles of design into an online context and extend your technical knowledge. From your research of online folios you will gain an understanding of self-promotion online and showcase your skill-set as well as building introductory and foundation skills in web authoring using WordPress.

DESCRIPTION

For this brief you will setup an online folio and identity. Your folio will be based on a WordPress site, which you may already have some familiarity with. For this project you will be taking it a further step - an introduction to designing and setting up a web space. You will install your own WordPress site, you will have complete access to the dashboard and you will be expected to add a theme and modify it using plugins. If you have any HTML experience this will be useful. If you don’t then you will still be able to make a good-looking theme via plugins and theme options. This control will allow you maximum compatibility but also should introduce you to a platform you can potentially design for and build as a freelancer.

For your online identity we will explore connecting with social media, the branding you can do as well as the do’s and don’ts.

You will have a series of submission points to meet and 9 weeks to complete the project (and a few extra weeks to refine) so you will need to work on it outside of class.

Some things to consider:

  • Overuse of design – too many bells and whistles. Some of the best folios and websites are the simplest in design. Consider colour usage on screen, type size and the functionality of the interactive elements.
  • Confusing navigation (flow, layout and organisation of information – menu structures, navigation buttons etc). Take note of visual size of items; remember that input is with a mouse.
  • Disregard of context. A lack of understanding of the how, when, where and why the folio is being used. Consider the viewer’s navigation process and characteristics. What do they want to know? What’s important to them? What will get you a job?

BACKGROUND

This is a folio and identity for you – so who are you? What do you stand for? What are your skills? You need to know the answers to these questions and communicate them.
